Day phase, no mystery rulings

In Khufia Mafia, the day phase follows a clean order: the God announces day, everyone opens their eyes, the God reveals the night's eliminations, resolves any immediate card actions, opens discussion, conducts the vote, eliminates the player with the most votes, checks that card for an immediate action and then checks whether the game has ended.

The official rules tell you what must happen. They do not prescribe a debate timer, ballot style, tie procedure or a point at which a player can no longer change a vote. Those details should be agreed by the group and described as facilitation, not presented as official Khufia Mafia rules.

The non-negotiable distinction: rules decide the sequence, card powers and win conditions. Facilitator choices only make that sequence easier to run. If a card or the live FAQ answers a special case, that answer beats any host shortcut.

The official day-phase vote ledger

Think of the day phase as eight boxes that the God closes one by one. Do not open discussion while a night elimination still has an unresolved card action. Do not start the next night while the vote or win check is unfinished.

1

Announce day

The God says it is daytime. Every player opens their eyes.

2

Reveal the night

The God narrates what happened and names the player or players eliminated at night.

3

Check cards

The God secretly checks every eliminated player's card for an action that happens immediately.

4

Open discussion

The remaining players discuss suspicions and decide whom they believe is Mafia.

5

Conduct the vote

The God runs the vote after discussion. Voting is a distinct resolution step.

6

Announce the result

The God announces who received the most votes and eliminates that player.

7

Check again

The God secretly reads the day elimination's card and resolves any immediate action.

8

Check the game

If neither official win condition has been reached, the God begins the next night.

This sequence comes from Cheatr's canonical Khufia Mafia instructions. If you need the full night-to-day loop around it, use the large-group pacing guide.

What the God should say during the day

A consistent script stops players from guessing whether discussion has started, whether voting is open or whether a card action is still being resolved. The wording below is a facilitation tool. It does not add rules.

  1. “Day begins. Everyone may open their eyes.” Wait until the room is actually back before narrating.
  2. “Last night, this happened...” Name the eliminated player or players as required. Do not reveal extra hidden information.
  3. “Pause while I check the eliminated card.” Read it privately and resolve an immediate action before opening discussion.
  4. “Discussion is open.” Surviving players may state suspicions, defend themselves and respond to accusations.
  5. “Discussion is closed. Voting begins.” Use the voting method the group agreed before the round.
  6. “The most votes went to...” Announce the eliminated player, then check that card privately for an immediate action.
  7. “I am checking the teams.” Apply the official win conditions before announcing another night.
Useful host reset: “One thing at a time. The card check is still happening. Discussion opens after this resolves.” This protects the official order without inventing a penalty for speaking early.

First-time Gods can also use Cheatr's guide to explaining a new game without losing the room. Explain the team objectives and phase loop first. Let individual cards explain their own exceptions.

Official voting rules versus facilitator choices

Official

What the instructions establish

  • Only remaining, non-eliminated players take part in the day discussion and vote.
  • Players discuss suspicions and vote for the person they suspect to be Mafia.
  • The God conducts voting.
  • The player with the most votes is eliminated.
  • The God checks that eliminated player's card for an immediate action.
  • The game continues only if neither official win condition has been reached.
Facilitation

What the group may choose

  • Whether voting uses raised hands, a name-by-name count or another clear method.
  • How long discussion stays open.
  • Whether accusations are taken one at a time.
  • What happens when the highest vote is tied.
  • When a cast vote becomes final.

Agree on these before the first day vote. The canonical instructions do not specify them, so do not label one choice as the official Cheatr ruling.

Keep a tiny ledger, not a secret constitution

For a busy table, the God can write the names of living players and tally the final votes beside them. That helps with counting, but the notes do not replace the role cards, the manual or the live Khufia Mafia FAQ. If a card creates a special case, pause the count and check the official material.

Three moments that cause most voting confusion

1. Discussion begins before night actions are resolved

The official flow places the night reveal and immediate card-action check before the vote. Finish both. Players should not begin building arguments from an event that the God has not fully resolved.

2. Players treat the first shouted name as a vote

An accusation during discussion is not automatically a final vote. The God conducts the vote as its own step. A clear “voting begins” cue separates talk from the count without changing the game.

3. The next night starts before the win check

After the day elimination and any immediate card action, check the teams. Mafia win when they equal or outnumber the Villagers. Villagers win when all Mafia are eliminated, and Police win with the Villagers. If neither condition is true, night begins again.

A first-round setup that prevents arguments later

  • Choose the God before cards move. The God runs the game, knows every role and is not part of the village.
  • Build the deck from the manual's reference table. Do not improvise the role mix from memory.
  • Keep every role card private. Players read their own description carefully and do not reveal the card during the game.
  • Say the win conditions aloud. Players should know what ends the game before the first night.
  • Choose the vote procedure. Decide how votes are counted, how ties are handled and when a vote becomes final. Label these as group choices.
  • Keep official support open. The live FAQ includes voting and elimination questions that can settle card-specific edge cases.

If some guests are still learning one another's names, settle the room before the first accusation. Cheatr's comfort ladder for unfamiliar groups helps a host build toward a discussion-heavy game without forcing instant performance.

Run the vote, not the argument

The best God is not the loudest person in the room. They make the current phase unmistakable, resolve every card at the right time and let the players create the drama. When your group wants a large-room game built around hidden roles, discussion and suspicion, explore Khufia Mafia and keep this ledger beside the manual.

Frequently asked questions

When does voting happen in Khufia Mafia?

Voting happens during the day, after the God announces the night's eliminations and resolves any immediate actions on eliminated cards. Remaining players discuss suspicions, then the God conducts the vote.

Who is eliminated during the day vote?

The canonical instructions say the God announces who received the most votes and eliminates that player. The God then secretly checks the card for an action that must happen immediately.

What happens if the Khufia Mafia vote is tied?

The canonical instructions do not specify a tie procedure. Agree on one before the first day vote and present it as a group facilitation choice, not an official Cheatr rule.

Can Khufia Mafia players change their votes?

The canonical instructions do not define a vote-change window. The God should tell the group when a vote becomes final before counting begins, then use that procedure consistently.

When should the God check whether the game has ended?

Check after the day elimination and any immediate card action have resolved. Mafia win when they equal or outnumber the Villagers. Villagers win when all Mafia are eliminated, and Police win with the Villagers.

Sources and fact-checking: the official day sequence, voting step, immediate card checks and win conditions were checked against the owner-designated Khufia Mafia instructions and the live support page on 17 August 2026. Ballot style, discussion length, tie handling and vote-finality suggestions are explicitly presented as facilitator choices.
