Police Inspector Gulabrao gets one bullet for the whole game, not one bullet every night. When Police wakes after Mafia, the player may name a suspected Mafia target or save the bullet for a later round. The rules make saving a legal choice. They do not reveal which choice is correct.
The decision in one minute
- Police wakes after Mafia during the night.
- Police has one bullet for the entire game.
- Police may target a player suspected of being Mafia.
- Police may decline to use the bullet that round.
Those points come from Cheatr's canonical Khufia Mafia instructions. Everything below about timing is decision advice, not an extra rule and not a guaranteed strategy.
What saving the bullet actually buys
Saving does not create more bullets. It preserves one future chance to act after the table has produced more discussion, accusations and voting behaviour. That extra information may help, but it may also mislead. A later shot is not automatically a better shot.
Using the bullet now does something different: it converts today's suspicion into an irreversible night action. If the suspicion is sound, the shot can help the village. If it is wrong, the one bullet is gone. The useful question is therefore not “Is it early or late?” It is:
“Is my reason strong enough to spend the only shot I will get?”
Saving is reasonable when
- your suspicion comes from one vague feeling;
- several players look equally plausible;
- you expect the next day discussion to test a claim;
- you cannot state a concrete reason for the target.
Using it is reasonable when
- you can name the evidence, not just the person;
- two or more clues point in the same direction;
- waiting is unlikely to make the decision clearer;
- you accept that the target may still be a Villager.
These are prompts for judgment, not a scoring system. Hidden-role information stays uncertain. Police is choosing a suspected Mafia target, not acting on a confirmed identity.
Two hypothetical nights
The examples below are invented table states made to explain the choice. They are not reports from a real Cheatr session.
Thin evidence: save
During the first day, three players were quiet. No one made a claim that can be checked, and the vote was scattered. Police feels uneasy about Player K but cannot say why K is more suspicious than the other quiet players.
Decision: save the bullet. In this example, firing would turn a general feeling into the game's only shot. Saving keeps the option open while the next discussion creates something more specific to assess.
Uncertainty that remains: K may still be Mafia. Saving is not proof that caution was correct.
Converging clues: use
Player R first said they supported one suspect, then changed their account after the vote. On the next day, R pushed the village toward a new target while avoiding a direct question about the earlier contradiction. Police has now seen two separate reasons to suspect R.
Decision: use the bullet on R. In this example, the choice has a stated basis and waiting may not produce a cleaner test.
Uncertainty that remains: R may be a Villager who explained themselves badly. A reasoned shot is still a risk, not a confirmation.
Use this sentence before you signal a target
Complete the sentence privately: “I am spending the bullet on this player because…”
If the ending is only “they seem suspicious,” save unless the game state gives you a stronger reason to act. If the ending identifies a contradiction, a repeated voting pattern or another specific clue, you at least know what evidence is carrying the decision. The clue can still be wrong, but the choice is inspectable rather than impulsive.
What Police should not assume
- “The first night is always too early.” The rules do not impose that restriction.
- “The last possible night is always best.” Waiting can preserve the bullet, but it can also preserve uncertainty.
- “A confident player must be Mafia.” Confidence is behaviour, not a revealed role.
- “God will confirm whether my suspicion is right.” The canonical flow asks Police for a suspected target; it does not give Police an investigation result before the shot.
Before the first night
Ask God to point out the exact Police text in the current card and manual, then remember two facts: one bullet for the whole game, and passing is allowed. If your group needs the complete night-to-day order, use Cheatr's large-group Khufia Mafia hosting guide. If you are deciding whether Khufia Mafia fits a ten-person room, start with the ten-player party-game guide. The current Khufia Mafia product page lists the official player-count and age fit.
Frequently asked questions
Does Police get one bullet every night?
No. Police Inspector Gulabrao has one bullet for the whole game. Once it is used, there is no second Police shot under the canonical rule.
Can Police skip a night without shooting?
Yes. When Police wakes, the player may choose not to use the bullet that round. The unused bullet remains available for a later round.
Does Police know whether the target is Mafia before shooting?
No confirmation is provided in the canonical Police step. Police chooses a player they suspect is Mafia, so the decision remains uncertain.
Fact-check: Police Inspector Gulabrao's action and the night sequence were checked against Cheatr's owner-designated canonical Khufia Mafia instructions on 2 October 2026. Decision examples are editorial hypotheticals, not official rules or claimed play observations.
