Large-group host control panel

One narrator. One visible phase. One decision at a time.

Pacing: under control

The simplest way to keep a large-group game moving is to give one host clear control of the sequence, announce only the current phase, collect one decision at a time and close every phase before opening the next. In Khufia Mafia, that means the God runs a repeatable loop: night, Mafia action, Police action, day reveal, discussion, vote, special-action check and win-condition check.

A large group does not need a louder explanation. It needs a visible state. Everyone should know whether eyes are closed, who is acting, whether discussion is open, whether voting has begun and whether the round has ended. The host can create that clarity without inventing new rules or forcing the room onto an arbitrary timer.

This playbook follows Cheatr's canonical Khufia Mafia instructions. The official rules do not prescribe ideal debate lengths or a special voting format, so the pacing controls below are facilitation choices, not added mechanics. If you are still choosing the right game for your headcount, start with the party games for ten people guide or the comfort ladder for groups where not everyone knows each other.

The six controls a large-group host actually needs

Role lockOne card per player, read privately and never revealed during the game.
Voice channelThe God gives instructions and receives secret decisions.
Phase lightNight and day are announced clearly before anyone acts.
Decision queueMafia, then Police, then the day discussion and vote.
Resolution logEliminations and card actions are checked before play continues.
Win checkAfter each cycle, confirm whether either official win condition has been reached.

Set the room before you explain the story

The canonical rules support 7 to 26 people. Choose one person to be God, also called the Gamemaster. The God is not part of the village. They know the roles, conduct the game and announce events. For a large group, this role is the control desk, so settle it before cards move.

Build the deck from the manual

The God creates the role deck using the reference table in the manual, mixing Mafia, Police and Villager roles for the player count. Do not improvise the role mix from memory.

Give everyone a private read

Distribute one role card to each player. Every player reads the description carefully and keeps the card secret. Questions about a card can go quietly to the God before the first night.

Explain the loop, not every possibility

Tell the room that night actions happen with eyes closed, day opens with the God narrating events, and surviving players then discuss and vote. Card-specific actions remain on the cards.

State the two team objectives

Mafia try to eliminate Villagers and win when they equal or outnumber them. Villagers win when all Mafia are eliminated. Police win with the Villagers.

If your group tends to interrupt the explanation, Cheatr's teach-in-five guide offers a useful structure: goal, turn shape, first decision, exceptions and a quick check. For Khufia Mafia, keep the first explanation at the team-and-phase level. The God can prompt each action when it becomes relevant.

Run the official night and day loop

The best pacing tool here is consistency. Use the same phase order and similar cue language each cycle. Players then only need to follow the current instruction.

Night

Close every eye

The God announces night and asks all players to close their eyes. Do not open the next action until the room is settled.

Mafia

Collect one secret target

The God asks the Mafia to open their eyes. They silently identify one another, decide whom to eliminate and inform the God secretly. The God then asks them to close their eyes.

Police

Offer the one-bullet decision

The God asks Police Inspector Gulabrao to open their eyes. The Police have one bullet for the whole game and may choose a suspected Mafia target or keep the bullet for another round. The God receives the choice, then asks the Police to close their eyes.

Day

Open eyes and resolve the night

The God announces day and everyone opens their eyes. The God narrates the night's events and names the eliminated player or players. If two people were killed, both names are announced.

Card check

Resolve special actions now

The God secretly checks whether each eliminated player's card contains a special action. If it does, that player takes the action immediately. Finish this resolution before discussion begins.

Vote

Discuss, vote and resolve again

The remaining players discuss suspicions and vote for the person they believe is Mafia. The God conducts the vote, announces the person with the most votes and checks that eliminated player's card for an immediate special action.

The clean handoff rule

Do not overlap phases. Mafia close their eyes before Police open theirs. Night eliminations and special actions are resolved before discussion. The vote is completed before the next night. This is not a new mechanic. It is simply the official sequence made audible and visible.

Keep discussion open without losing the vote

The official rules say that remaining players discuss their suspicions and vote, but they do not set a debate timer or dictate how ballots must be counted. That gives the host room to choose a clear method suited to the group, as long as it does not change roles, powers or win conditions.

When the room does this The God can say What stays official
Several accusations begin together “One accusation at a time. Name the player and your reason.” Surviving players still discuss suspicions.
The same point keeps circling “Any new evidence before we vote?” The God still conducts the vote.
People start voting mid-discussion “Discussion is open. I will call the vote separately.” The vote remains its own resolution step.
The eliminated player's card has text “Pause. I am checking the card action first.” Special actions happen immediately on elimination.
The group asks who has won “Hold the next night while I check the teams.” The official win conditions decide the game.

These phrases are host prompts, not scriptural rules. Their job is to mark the state of play. Avoid adding claims such as “everyone must speak” or “debate ends after a fixed number of minutes” unless your group knowingly agrees to a house format before starting.

Use a visible control panel, not a hidden stopwatch

A simple sheet of paper can show the current state: NIGHT, MAFIA, POLICE, DAY, DISCUSS, VOTE or CHECK. Point to the active label as you speak. This does not add a rule. It reduces the amount of information the host must repeat.

Track only what the God needs

  • Each player's role
  • Current living players
  • The Mafia's night target
  • Whether the Police bullet has been used
  • Immediate actions on eliminated cards

Announce only what players should know

  • The current phase
  • Who was eliminated when the rules require it
  • When discussion opens
  • When the vote begins and who received the most votes
  • Whether an official win condition has ended the game

Keeping those channels separate matters in a hidden-role game. The God knows every role, but the village should receive only the information the flow calls for. When in doubt, pause and read the relevant card or manual entry instead of filling the silence with an invented ruling.

Close every cycle with the win check

After the day vote and any immediate card action, the God checks whether the game has ended. If the Mafia now equal or outnumber the Villagers, the Mafia win. If all Mafia have been eliminated, the Villagers win, and Police share that victory. If neither condition is true, the God announces the next night and repeats the same sequence.

This final check is part of the pacing system because it prevents a new night from beginning after the game has already been decided. It also gives the room a clean reset point. Finish the resolution, check the teams, then either end the game or say “Night begins.”

Frequently asked questions

How many people can play Khufia Mafia?

Cheatr's canonical instructions say 7 to 26 people can play. One person is chosen as God or Gamemaster and is not part of the village.

What order should the God follow at night?

Announce night, ask everyone to close their eyes, call the Mafia to open their eyes and secretly choose a target, close the Mafia's eyes, then call Police Inspector Gulabrao. The Police may use their one bullet or keep it for another round. Police then close their eyes before day begins.

When does the group vote?

Voting happens during the day, after the God announces the night's eliminations and resolves any immediate special actions. Remaining players discuss their suspicions, then the God conducts the vote and announces who received the most votes.

Can the host set a debate timer?

The canonical rules do not prescribe an ideal debate length. A host may agree on a facilitation format with the group, but should not present a timer as an official Khufia Mafia rule.

When does Khufia Mafia end?

The Mafia win when they equal or outnumber the Villagers. The Villagers win when every Mafia player has been eliminated. Police win with the Villagers.

Khufia Mafia mechanics were checked against Cheatr's canonical instructions and the live product page on 2 August 2026. Hosting prompts are clearly identified as facilitation, not official rules.
