Treat garba as the anchor, not as a gap that must be filled. Decide once: play before, play after or bring no game. The correct side depends on a different hard stop, group and energy check.
Make the before-or-after decision first
A game before garba must survive a departure deadline. A game after garba must survive a fresh opt-in from the people who actually return. Do not make one optimistic plan serve both windows.
If either window is uncertain, use the festival visit-window calculator to include setup, teaching, play, packing and a real buffer.
The Garba Bookend Card
Before garba
- Write the exact pack-up time: ___
- Count the willing 16+ players who are ready now: ___
- Name the game and explainer: ___
- Start only if one complete game, teaching and pack-up fit before the hard stop.
After garba
- Count the willing 16+ players who are still present: ___
- Confirm a stable seated place and the next non-negotiable time: ___
- Name the game and, for Khufia Mafia, the willing God: ___
- Choose again. Do not treat the before-garba choice as an automatic rematch.
No game is a complete answer when the player count, age guidance, facilitator or stable window does not fit.
This is an original Team Cheatr planning tool. It organises information from your own group; it is not a claim about how every garba plan works.
If you play before garba
Boom Machale fits 4 to 10 players and is listed for ages 16+ with a play estimate below 30 minutes. Use that estimate as the play portion, not the whole window. New players still need a complete explanation, and the cards still need to be packed before you leave.
The canonical game lets a player make one of four turn choices, including playing legal cracker cards, starting a burst with an ignitor or passing. Do not shorten the rules or invent a mid-game stop to force it into the schedule.
Group-chat line: “We will start only if we can finish and pack before ___; otherwise we keep the game for later.”
If you play after garba
Recount from zero. If 7 to 26 people, including a willing God, want a discussion-led game, Khufia Mafia can fit its current player guidance. The God creates the role deck, knows the roles and conducts the alternating night and day phases, so a willing facilitator is a real requirement.
If 4 to 10 people want number-based card play instead, Boom Machale may fit. If fewer than four people want a game, neither Cheatr title fits its listed range. Keep the bag closed and let the meeting end with conversation.
For a group with mixed participation levels, use the quiet-and-loud guest participation plan before asking for the final opt-in.
A worked bookend example
Example, not a claimed play observation: Eight adults plan to leave at 7:10 pm. At 6:25 pm, the host reserves 15 minutes for packing, shoes and travel uncertainty. Boom Machale's listed play time is below 30 minutes, but three players are new and the teaching time is unknown. The before-garba answer is no game.
Later, seven adults return to one home. All are 16+, the next hour is stable and one person is willing to be God. Khufia Mafia now fits the listed group requirement if everyone actively wants discussion. If one person leaves before setup, recounting produces six including the God, so Khufia Mafia no longer fits. The group can check Boom Machale for 4 to 10 willing players or end the plan without a game.
Three useful follow-up questions
Should we carry both games?
Only when you genuinely expect to recalculate after garba and carrying them does not complicate the outing. Keep both packed until the current group chooses. Do not open two boxes to create more options.
What if friends join only after garba?
Count the final willing group, then check age, player range, time and facilitator needs from the beginning. New arrivals do not inherit the earlier choice.
What if fewer than four adults want to play?
Neither Boom Machale nor Khufia Mafia fits its listed player range. Keep the game packed and choose conversation or another suitable activity instead.
