A free hour between festival visits is not automatically a game hour. Count the time needed to set up, explain, play, pack away and still leave calmly before the next commitment.
Ganesh Chaturthi falls on 14 September 2026. This guide is for the social gaps around visits and gatherings, not ritual or devotional moments.
The Cheatr Visit-Window Calculator
Write one number in each box. Use your real group, room and familiarity with the selected game. Do not borrow the sample numbers if they do not fit.
Open the box, clear the surface and prepare only what the manual requires.
Explain the rules to this group. Add time when the game is new to them.
Use the current official duration as guidance, not a promise.
Return cards, manual and box to one place.
Protect time for shoes, goodbyes, lifts or the next arrival.
Find the real window first
- Name the hard stop. “We leave at 6:10” is usable. “We should go around six” is not.
- Confirm the window is stable. Do not count time during a meal, while people are still arriving, or while a ride is unresolved.
- Count willing players. Use the current player and age guidance for the chosen game.
- Choose one game before calculating. Different groups need different teaching and setup time.
- Keep the buffer intact. A close calculation is a reason to wait, not a reason to remove the exit margin.

Use official timing as one part of the plan
The current Boom Machale product page and Khufia Mafia product page both present the games as taking less than 30 minutes. That helps with the play box, but it does not include your group’s setup, explanation, interruptions or departure.
| Planning question | What to enter | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Does everyone already know the game? | A teaching allowance based on the actual manual and the people present. | That “easy to learn” means zero explanation. |
| Is the room ready? | Time to create a clean, reachable play area and prepare the deck. | That a box can be opened anywhere without setup. |
| Must the round finish? | The full published play allowance unless your group has a tested shorter format supported by the rules. | That the game can be cut off at an arbitrary minute. |
| What happens at the stop? | Enough buffer to pack, gather belongings and leave without rushing. | That the next plan will quietly move later. |

Three stop-or-go examples
Example 1: 50 stable minutes, familiar Boom Machale group
The host writes 5 minutes for setup, 0 for teaching because every active player already knows the game, 30 for the published play allowance, 5 for pack-up and 10 for departure buffer. Total: 50 minutes. It fits exactly, so the host starts only if the hard stop is firm and the room is ready now.
Example 2: 35 minutes, first-time players
The group would need an explanation before play. Even before choosing exact setup and teaching numbers, adding them to the published play allowance and a real exit buffer exceeds the available window. The answer is no game yet. Keep the box packed and agree on a later start time.
Example 3: 55 minutes, Khufia Mafia group but no gamemaster chosen
The canonical game needs a gamemaster who prepares the role deck and conducts the phases. Because that setup is unresolved, the calculation is incomplete. Choose the gamemaster and prepare the deck first, then recalculate. Do not turn an unknown into zero minutes.
The two-minute exit plan
Before dealing, assign three simple jobs:
- Time caller: announces the agreed final-start and pack-up points.
- Box keeper: keeps the manual and packaging together.
- Departure checker: watches the next commitment, lift or arrival time.
These are hosting jobs, not rule changes. They keep the hard stop visible without interrupting every turn.
When the answer is “not now”
Do not compress the rules, drop the buffer or pressure guests to continue. Leave the game packed, choose a later stable window and let conversation carry the gap. A correct no-start decision is better than an unfinished round and a rushed exit.
Questions hosts usually ask
What should count as the hard stop?
Use the first non-negotiable event: the time you must leave, the next guests arrive, a meal begins or the room changes use. If that time is uncertain, the window is not stable enough to calculate.
What if only one person knows the rules?
Include a teaching allowance based on the official manual and this group. If the explainer cannot estimate it confidently, wait for a longer window rather than assigning zero minutes.
Can new guests join halfway through?
Plan for a clean restart unless the official rules support joining mid-game. If arrivals are likely during the round, treat the window as unstable and start later.
