After Dark Reading the room…

If you have read our general guide on how to play Mafia with friends, you already know the bones of the game: night falls, someone gets quietly eliminated, everyone argues about it, and somebody always votes wrong. Khufia Mafia keeps every bit of that tension but rebuilds the entire ruleset around it, 25 named characters instead of generic labels, a moderator called God instead of a narrator, and two distinct intensity modes depending on how much chaos your group can actually handle at 11pm. This is the Khufia-specific rulebook, explained properly, for the version sitting in your box.

Quick Setup: Getting Your First Round Running

Skip the part where someone spends ten minutes tearing paper into role slips. Here is everything you actually need to do before the first night phase begins.

1
Count your players and pick a God. The God moderates, deals, and reads out the actions each night. They usually do not play a role themselves, at least for round one.
2
Generate or shuffle the deck. Use the physical cards in the box, or skip shuffling entirely with the free digital role generator at play.cheatr.games/khufia, punch in your headcount and it deals a fresh mix every time.
3
Choose Tame or Chaotic mode. Tame keeps fewer character powers active at once, Chaotic opens up nearly the full roster. More on the difference below.
4
Deal face-down. Every player looks only at their own card and keeps it hidden for the entire game, win or lose, revealed or not.
5
God reads the win conditions aloud, once. Villagers win when every Mafia member is voted out. Mafia wins the moment their numbers equal or outnumber the remaining Villagers. Say it before round one so nobody argues mid-game.

How the Deck Scales With Your Group

Khufia Mafia's whole point is that it does not fall apart once you cross eight or ten players, the way most party card games do. The deck stretches to fit the room, roughly like this:

Players (incl. God) What's Typically In Play Best Mode
7–10 Police, a small Mafia crew, and a tight core of named Villagers Tame
11–18 More named Villager powers active at once, alliances get genuinely messy Tame first round, then Chaotic
19–26 Close to the full 25-card roster live, God duties often split between two people Chaotic

If counting cards and ratios by hand sounds like a chore, the digital role generator does this math for you automatically, just enter the headcount and mode.

How a Round Actually Plays Out

Every round has the same two phases as classic Mafia, night and day, but Khufia layers in named character powers that fire in a specific order.

1
Night falls. God says "everyone close your eyes" and waits for actual silence, not just closed eyes with one person peeking.
2
Mafia wakes up. They silently agree on a target, then close their eyes again.
3
Named powers activate, one by one. Police checks a player, and depending on who is dealt in, characters like Dolonath can grant immunity or Koyal can hold an extra bullet in reserve. The manual lists the exact order so God does not lose track.
4
Day breaks. "Everyone, open your eyes." God announces who was eliminated, or that nobody was.
5
Debate. Everyone accuses, defends, and bluffs. Five minutes is usually enough before people start repeating themselves.
6
Vote. Majority rules. Decide your tie-break rule (re-vote or no elimination) before round one.
7
Repeat. Night falls again. The cycle continues until Villagers eliminate every Mafia player, or Mafia catch up in numbers.

Tame Mode vs Chaotic Mode

This is the one decision that changes the entire feel of your night, and it is worth getting right before you deal a single card.

🌱 Tame Mode
  • Fewer character powers layered into a single round
  • Easier to explain to total first-timers
  • Faster rounds, less second-guessing about what everyone's card even does
  • The right call for a group's very first game
🔥 Chaotic Mode
  • Most of the 25-card roster's powers are live at once
  • Longer, messier debates with more twists to argue over
  • Best once your group already knows the basics
  • The default for groups of 15 or more

A common house rule, run one Tame round to get everyone comfortable with the flow, then switch to Chaotic once nobody needs to ask what their own card does anymore.

Meet a Few of the Cast

Unlike classic Mafia's generic Villager and Detective, Khufia gives almost every card a name and a personality. Here is a small sample of who you might get dealt.

👮
Police
Plays for the Villager side, quietly working out who is lying, one check at a time.
🤝
Dolonath
Can hand out immunity, even to a Mafia player if they are not careful about who they trust.
🔫
Koyal
Carries an extra bullet in reserve, useful even after Police is already gone.
💌
Vicky
Secretly links two players together and can choose to reveal the connection later.
💬
Bheera
Refuses to fully leave the conversation, their vote still counts on a delay after elimination.
🎭
Mafia
Knows fellow Mafia members, secretly eliminates a Villager each night, acts innocent by day.

That is six out of 25. We broke down the full cast, including the ones whose powers only reveal themselves mid-game, in Meet the Cast of Khufia Mafia.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does God get to play a role too? Once your group knows the flow well, sure, but for a first game it genuinely helps to have one neutral person keeping the pacing and rules honest.

Can we switch from Tame to Chaotic mid-game? It is cleaner to decide the mode before dealing, but nothing stops you from agreeing to bump up the intensity for the next round once everyone is warmed up.

What if a named Villager's power conflicts with another player's? The manual lists a night order for exactly this reason, God resolves actions in that sequence so there is no ambiguity mid-round.

Do I have to use the physical cards, or can I use the digital generator every time? Either works. The free digital role generator is genuinely useful even if you own the physical deck, since it reshuffles instantly for repeat game nights.

Is this the same game as classic Mafia? Same core mechanic, night, day, vote, but Khufia Mafia replaces the generic roles with 25 named characters so almost nobody is just sitting around waiting to be eliminated. If you want the plain-vanilla version's rules too, we cover it in How to Play Mafia With Friends.
