Learn how to play Boom Machale: deal the whole deck, play sequences or matching-number crackers, burst firecrackers with ignitors, and use a matka at the right moment. You win by emptying your hand first, or by bursting a firecracker on your turn with any eight ignitors played at once.
If you've bought the game, or someone's gifted it to you and you're standing there holding a box of cards wondering where to even start, this is the guide. No fluff, just how it actually works.
What Is Boom Machale?
Boom Machale is a fast, strategy-driven card game from Cheatr Games. Players build a shared play area with numbered crackers, burst firecrackers with ignitors, and use matkas to protect themselves from a burst's effect. The aim is to empty your hand first, with an alternate win available through an eight-ignitor burst on your turn. It's built around that specific desi thrill of a lit sutli bomb burning down to nothing, except here the fuse is a deck of cards and your friends are the ones lighting it.
It's 100% original artwork, made in India, and designed for exactly the kind of loud, slightly chaotic game night Indian households are built for.
Setting Up Your First Game
You need 4 to 10 players and a shared play area everyone can reach. Keep the manual and reference cards nearby for the instructions on individual crackers.
The manual ships in the box. Keep it handy for card-specific effects, and visit the official game-support page at play.cheatr.games/boom.
What Do the Ignitor, Matka, Firecracker and Mithai Cards Actually Do?
Each card type pulls you in a different direction, and that tug of war is where the fun sits.
The numbers tell you which crackers can follow one another. The printed instructions tell you what happens when a cracker bursts. Read both before choosing your move.
What Can You Play on Your Turn?
On your turn, choose one of four actions:
- Play a sequence of crackers: for example, 1-2-3-4-5, 6-7-8 or 3-4.
- Play multiples of one cracker number: for example, 2-2-2, 7-7 or 5-5-5-5.
- Start bursting the topmost firecracker in the shared play area with an ignitor.
- Pass your turn.
If the play area is empty, you may start with any cracker number. Otherwise, your crackers must start at the same number as the last cracker played, or the next higher number. On a 4, for example, you may start with 4 or 5.
Stop your sequence at 8. After that, the next player may play an 8 or start again from 1. You do not wrap from 8 to 1 within the same sequence.
How to Burst a Firecracker
A normal burst needs two matching regular ignitors or one Fire ignitor. Ignitors can only be played on firecrackers, and the target is the topmost firecracker in the shared play area.
Play the first regular ignitor on your turn. Any player may immediately add the second matching ignitor, even outside their turn. If you hold both matching ignitors, you may play both on your own turn. Play a single Fire ignitor on your turn to burst the firecracker by itself; its player counts as both the first and second ignitor player.
After the burst, read the burst firecracker's instruction and redistribute all cards in the play area as it directs, among the unsafe players. The player or players who supplied the ignitors are safe, as is the player protected by the first matka. The burst firecracker and played ignitors are part of the play area; do not leave them out of redistribution.
Once the effect is resolved, the player who supplied the second ignitor resumes play. For a single Fire ignitor, that is the player who played it. A matka can change who resumes and reverse the direction, as explained below.
What Happens After Mithai or a Matka?
Mithai: follow the action on the card
A mithai cracker bursts immediately when played. Carry out its printed action without an ignitor. There is no firecracker-style redistribution: remove the played mithai card or cards from the game and keep the other cards in the play area. The next player in turn resumes, unless a matka changes the restart.
Matka: act immediately after the burst
You may play a matka immediately after a firecracker or mithai bursts. It saves you from that redistribution or mithai action. There are two matkas in the deck, but only the first one played for that burst applies.
The player whose matka applies resumes the game, and the direction of play reverses. If turns were moving clockwise, they now move anticlockwise, and vice versa. Having no matka does not eliminate you from the game.
How to Win Boom Machale
There are two official ways to win:
- Be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
- On your turn, burst a firecracker by playing any eight ignitors at once.
The eight ignitors do not need to form matching pairs. You must play them together, on your turn, to burst a firecracker; simply collecting eight does not win the game. The out-of-turn second-ignitor rule for an ordinary burst does not change this requirement.
Strategy Tips Grounded in the Rules
Your best move depends on your hand and the cracker in the play area. These checks help you make a legal, deliberate choice:
- Check the starting number. Look for a legal sequence or multiples beginning at the same number as the last cracker, or one higher.
- Read the top firecracker before bursting it. Its printed redistribution instruction determines the effect of the burst.
- Stay alert after the first regular ignitor. If you have the matching second ignitor, the rules let you play it immediately, even outside your turn.
- Know the matka window. Play it immediately after the burst if you want its protection. Only the first matka applies.
- Watch both routes to victory. Emptying your hand and completing an eight-ignitor burst on your turn are different finish conditions.
- Remember that passing is allowed. Choose it when you do not want to make one of the other available plays.
Is Boom Machale Only Fun in Big Groups, or Does It Work Small Too?
Boom Machale is listed for 4 to 10 players, ages 16+, with a play time under 30 minutes. The same deal, turn and win rules apply throughout that player range. Uneven starting hands are allowed, so deal the whole deck rather than setting cards aside to make every hand equal.
One customer, Vishrut Kshirsagar, put it well: "You play Boom Machale once and you realise the ingeniousness of it. They've made it so easy, yet you need strategy and of course a little luck, so it's always challenging." That's roughly how most first sessions go, easy to start, harder to walk away from.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many players do you need for Boom Machale?
The official player range is 4 to 10.
How long does one game take, and what age is it for?
The current product listing recommends ages 16+ and a play time under 30 minutes.
Do you set up a draw pile?
No. Shuffle and distribute the entire playing deck. Some players may start with more cards than others.
What happens if I have no matka?
You keep playing. Matkas protect their players from a burst's effect; they are not lives. You win by emptying your hand first or completing the eight-ignitor win on your turn.
Can I play an ignitor outside my turn?
The first regular ignitor must be played on your turn. The second matching regular ignitor may be played by any player, even out of turn. The alternate eight-ignitor winning burst must happen on your own turn.
Who goes next after a burst?
After a firecracker burst, the second-ignitor player resumes; a lone Fire-ignitor player fills that role. After mithai, the next player in turn resumes. If a matka applies, its player resumes instead and the direction reverses.
Where can I check the full rules if I get stuck mid-game?
