Do not redesign the whole flat for one game. Give the living room two clear states: normal hosting and active play. The setup works only when you can open the game without blocking movement, then return every loose component to one known place.
Start with the room's second job
During a Navratri visit, the living room may still need to handle arrivals, bags, food, conversation or people leaving. A good small-space setup therefore has to work in two states, not just look tidy when the first card is dealt.
If you do not have a dining table, use the more detailed no-table surface and accessibility guide. Today's task is different: make the room reversible so normal hosting can resume without hunting for cards.
The Two-State Room Card
- Game station: Where will the closed box, manual and bag wait?
- Active centre: What is the smallest clean, stable area needed for the chosen game?
- Held items: What can remain in players' hands instead of spreading across the room?
- Clear route: Which doorway-to-seat path must remain open throughout?
- Reset signal: At what complete stopping point will all loose components return to the box or bag?
Fill this card before moving furniture. If the active centre and clear route cannot coexist, keep the game packed or move it to a better room.
This is an original Team Cheatr planning template. It is a room check, not a universal claim about flats or festival hosting.
Open less than you think you need
The current Boom Machale page lists 4 to 10 players, ages 16+ and a play estimate below 30 minutes. Its players hold their hands, but the group still needs a shared place for active cracker cards, ignitors and bursts. Keep the box, manual and unused material at the game station rather than widening the centre.
The canonical rules allow a player to play sequences or multiples, start bursting the topmost firecracker with an ignitor, or pass. The central setup must keep the topmost card and any played ignitors unambiguous. A cramped surface is not a reason to alter the official play order.
Use a different room check for Khufia Mafia
The current Khufia Mafia page lists 7 to 26 players including the God, ages 16+ and less than 30 minutes. Its canonical flow depends on held role cards, a God who knows the roles, and alternating night and day phases. Prioritise enough seating, clear hearing and a private view of each role card. Give the God one stable spot for the role deck and reference.
A large supported player count does not prove a particular flat can host that group comfortably. If the seats, sightlines or clear route fail, choose a smaller suitable plan instead of squeezing everyone in.
Keep the reset smaller than the game
- Finish the current game or reach an official end. Do not invent a mid-game stop.
- Collect active cards first, then each player's hand.
- Check the seating edge and floor before closing the box.
- Return the box, manual and bag to the game station.
- Restore the clear route before food, arrivals or another activity resumes.
Worked example: seven adults in one living room
Example, not a claimed play observation: A flat has one sofa, three movable chairs and a coffee table. Seven adults are present, all are 16+, and the route from the entrance to the balcony must stay open.
For Boom Machale, seven is within the listed range. The coffee table becomes the active centre, players hold their hands, and the closed box and bag wait on one side stool. No extra display of cards is added. At a complete finish, the host collects the centre and hands before the table returns to serving use.
Khufia Mafia also meets its listed headcount only if the seven include a willing God. The host then checks whether everyone can hear the God and keep role cards private without blocking the route. If those checks fail, the product range alone does not make the room suitable.
Three useful follow-up questions
Do I need to move the furniture?
Only when the current arrangement blocks a clear route, makes the active centre unreachable or leaves someone without suitable seating. Move the fewest pieces needed and remember where they return.
Can everyone sit on the floor to save space?
Only if every player is comfortable getting down, remaining there and standing up again. Floor seating is an option, not the default. Use chairs and sofa seats first when they better serve the group.
What if the living room must switch back during the game?
Choose a game and start time that can reach a complete official finish before the switch. If that is uncertain, keep the game packed. Reversibility does not justify interrupting a game halfway.
